In 1950 tere was just one commercially available computer-the ENIAC
1.originally devoloped to handle the U.S Census this computer filee up a large room, rquired special air conditionig and cost more than $500,000(that is 1950 dollars).
Not realizing that less expencive computers could be utilized for a mulitude of tasks ,some scientsts at the time throught dozen or so"supercomputer"should be built to handle all the data processing needs of United States.Forutnately the scientists were wrong .In 30 years, the cost of computing power equivalent to the ENAIC 1 has dropped to less than$qo(1981 dollors). In the late 1950 and early 1960's computers costing costing $1 million or more started to handle data prcessing for very large companies, those who could affort the high price.Today an equivalent system is available ofr $5000 to $8000 cheap enough to do the book keeping for the loal drugstore.
The Morst significant development in the first 30 years of computers was the invention of the micro processor-populaly known as the "computer on a chip".First introduced by inter corporation in 1972 as the result of resurch project headed by E>M Huff, the microprocessor compacts the equvalent of more than 10,000 eloctronic components.(transistors, doides, and so on)on chip of sillicon about the siz of cornflake. These components ,which once filled dozens of circuit boards.are the ones that make up the logic of a computer.
